Published by Blackie & Son, Limited, UK, circa 1890 - From the Vere Foster art series: SIMPLE LESSONS IN WATER COLOUR FLOWERS.
This is an old, hard-to-find instruction book in painting flowers in watercolor. It features twelve color plates - studies from nature "executed in a bold and simple style, with lessons in sketching and colouring".
The author of this title in the Vere Foster series exhibited her flower paintings at the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists and New Water-Colour Society in the 1880s and 1890s. Of the twelve tipped-on color lithographed plates from paintings, 8 are by Ada Hanbury, plus 4 by Ethel Nisbet. There are additional sketches and designs in black and white.
The covers are Olive green pictorial cloth with lettering and floral design in dark blue. (With age, the covers now look more gray than green.) 68 pages plus the twelve plates. There are publisher's ads at the rear. The book measures approx. 7¾"-9¾" tall.
The12 plates are in overall very good condition. The book itself is fair to good for it's age. There are no loose or missing pages, but the first few pages are loosening (see pic.) The pages are clean but with some tanning. The covers are grimy with some spotting, abrasions in spots, wear in spots. The spine ends are worn, the corners bumped. The page with the Marsh Marigolds has a light tear. The plates are suitable for framing. A nice old book.
